Description

These Old Fashioned Cinnamon Buns are the ultimate comfort food, offering a perfect balance of chewy dough and sweet, spicy filling. The dough is enriched with milk and butter, resulting in a soft, pillowy texture that rises beautifully. Each bun is packed with a generous layer of brown sugar, cinnamon, plump raisins, and crunchy walnuts for a delightful contrast in texture. Topped with a simple powdered sugar glaze, these buns are best enjoyed warm, straight from the oven.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 1/2 cup sugar, salt, yeast, and 1 cup of flour.
  2. In a saucepan, heat the milk and 1/4 cup butter until warm (120 to 130°F); the butter does not need to melt entirely.
  3. Using a mixer at low speed, beat the warm liquid mixture into the dry ingredients until blended.
  4. Increase speed to medium and beat for 2 minutes.
  5. Beat in the egg and 1 cup of flour; continue beating for 2 minutes.
  6. Stir in 1 1/2 cups of flour.
  7. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth, about 10 minutes, adding more flour (about 1/4 cup) while kneading if necessary.
  8. Shape dough into a ball, place in a greased bowl, and turn dough over so the top is greased.
  9. Cover and let rise in a warm place (85°F), free from drafts, for 1 hour or until doubled in bulk.
  10. Punch down the dough, turn onto a floured surface, cover, and let rest for 15 minutes.
  11. Grease a 13x9 inch baking pan.
  12. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, walnuts, raisins, and cinnamon.
  13. Melt the remaining 1/4 cup of butter.
  14. On a floured surface, roll the dough into an 18x12 inch rectangle.
  15. Brush the dough with the melted butter, then sprinkle evenly with the sugar mixture.
  16. Starting with the 18-inch side, roll up the dough in a jelly-roll fashion and pinch the seam to seal.
  17. With the seam-side down, cut the roll crosswise into 18 slices and place them in the prepared pan, cut side down.
  18. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 40 minutes.
  19. Bake for 20 minutes in a preheated 400°F (204°C) oven.
  20. Cool slightly, then mix powdered sugar and water until smooth and brush over the tops of the buns.
