Description

Onion Blossoms are a classic American comfort food that transforms humble sweet onions into a crispy, golden delight. By carefully scoring the onion and deep-frying it, you create a beautiful flower-like shape that is both visually stunning and incredibly tasty. The exterior becomes crunchy and seasoned with Cajun spices, while the interior remains tender and sweet. Served alongside a rich, tangy dip made from mayonnaise, sour cream, and chili powder, this dish offers a perfect balance of flavors and textures. It is an ideal appetizer for game days, parties, or a fun twist on a weeknight dinner. Simple to prepare with pantry staples, these onion blossoms are sure to become a family favorite.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large heavy-bottomed pot to 350&# 194;°F (175ðC).
  2. Peel the outer skin from the onions, leaving the root end intact to hold the layers together.
  3. Slice off the top of the onion to expose the layers.
  4. Starting at the top, make vertical cuts downward toward the root, stopping about 1/8 inch from the bottom. Space cuts 1/8 inch apart.
  5. Rotate the onion 90 degrees and repeat the vertical cuts to create a checkerboard pattern across the top surface.
  6. In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, sour cream, chili powder, and 1 1/2 teaspoons of Cajun seasoning. Mix well and set aside.
  7. In a 1-gallon plastic bag, combine flour and the remaining 1 teaspoon of Cajun seasoning. Shake to mix.
  8. Pour milk into a small, deep bowl.
  9. Place one onion into the flour mixture and coat thoroughly, ensuring flour gets into the cuts.
  10. Dip the floured onion into the milk, coating it completely.
  11. Return the onion to the flour mixture and coat again for a thick, crispy crust.
  12. Carefully lower the onion into the hot oil. Fry for 5 to 7 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
  13. Remove onion with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Repeat with the second onion.
  14. Once cool enough to handle, remove and discard the hard root end from the center of each onion blossom.
  15. Place onion blossoms on a serving plate and spoon a generous amount of the spicy dip into the center of each. Serve immediately.

Note

Safety Warning: When deep frying, be extremely careful with hot oil. Do not overcrowd the fryer. Ensure onions are dry before coating to prevent splattering.

Storage: Best served immediately after frying. The batter will soften if left out. Leftover dip can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Variations: You can add grated Parmesan cheese to the flour mixture for extra flavor. For a milder version, reduce the amount of Cajun seasoning or chili powder.

Tip: Using Vidalia or Walla Walla sweet onions yields the best results due to their mild flavor and high sugar content.
