Oreos
Description
Recreate the beloved classic with this homemade Oreo recipe. Crisp, dark chocolate cookies are paired with a rich, smooth vanilla filling for a nostalgic treat. The cookie dough uses cake mix and cocoa for deep flavor, while the filling relies on gelatin to hold its shape without becoming too stiff. Perfect for parties, bake sales, or a sweet afternoon snack, these cookies offer a satisfying crunch and melt-in-your-mouth center. They are easier to make than you might think and allow you to customize the sweetness and chocolate intensity to your liking. A fantastic way to impress friends and family with a homemade twist on a store-bought favorite.Ingredients
Directions
-
Preheat oven to 400F (200C).
-
In a large bowl, combine the Devil's Food Cake mix, eggs, water, cooking oil, and cocoa powder.
-
Blend well until the mixture forms a cohesive dough that can be shaped into a ball.
-
Let the dough stand for 20 minutes to firm up.
-
Form the dough into 1/2-inch balls and place them 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet.
-
Flatten each ball with the smooth bottom of a drinking glass that has been greased once and dipped into Nestles Quik powder for each cookie.
-
Bake at 400F (204C) for 8 minutes.
-
Remove cookies from the oven immediately and flatten them further with the back of a spatula while still hot.
-
Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 20 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
-
For the filling, soften the gelatin in cold water.
-
Place the softened gelatin in a heatproof cup in a pan of hot water and allow it to completely dissolve.
-
Meanwhile, beat the Crisco (or shortening) until light and fluffy, then gradually add the confectioners' sugar and vanilla extract.
-
Beat the mixture well for about ten minutes until creamy.
-
Cool the dissolved gelatin slightly and beat it into the filling mixture.
-
Use about 1 tablespoon of filling to sandwich two cooled cookies together.

Note
The gelatin in the filling is used primarily to help the filling hold its shape when spread between the cookies, preventing it from oozing out too easily.
Ensure the cookies are completely cooled before assembling with the filling to prevent the filling from melting or becoming too soft.
Store assembled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
If you prefer a firmer filling, you can refrigerate the assembled cookies for 30 minutes before serving.
For a vegan version, substitute the eggs with flax eggs and use a vegan shortening and cake mix, though the texture may vary slightly.
