Description

This Parmesan Bread is a savory, golden-crusted loaf that delivers a rich, cheesy aroma with every slice. The dough is enriched with butter and egg for a tender crumb, while the addition of dried onion flakes and garlic salt provides a deep, savory backbone that complements the sharp tang of grated Parmesan. It has a satisfyingly chewy texture and a beautiful, rustic appearance that makes it perfect for serving alongside soups, stews, or as a hearty base for sandwiches. Whether you are hosting a dinner party or simply craving fresh-baked comfort food, this bread is an easy-to-make staple that elevates any meal with its homemade charm and delicious flavor profile.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Warm the water to approximately 105-110F (40-43C) to activate the yeast without killing it.
  2. In a large mixing bowl or bread machine pan, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  3. Stir in the egg, butter pieces, salt, garlic salt, and dried onion flakes.
  4. Gradually add the bread flour and grated Parmesan cheese, mixing until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface or use the dough cycle of your bread machine for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  7. Punch down the dough to release air bubbles and shape it into a loaf.
  8. Place the shaped loaf in a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes until it crowns just above the rim of the pan.
  9. Preheat the oven to 375F (190C).
  10. Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 190F (88C).
  11. Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
  12. Turn the loaf out onto a wire rack and let it cool completely before slicing.

Note

Storage: Store leftover bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze slices for up to 3 months.

Substitutions: You can use whole wheat flour instead of bread flour for a heartier texture, though you may need to add an extra 1/4 cup of water.

Tips: If using a bread machine, select the "Basic" or "White" cycle with a "Medium" crust setting. Add the butter and cheese after the initial kneading cycle if your machine has a beep function, or add them with the other ingredients as directed.

Variation: Add 1/2 cup of chopped fresh parsley or basil to the dough for a fresh herb flavor.
