Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (177ðC).
  2. Cut a hole in the top of the Shepherd's bread loaf about 5 inches in diameter, reserving the crust as a lid.
  3. Scoop out the soft bread from the interior of the loaf, saving it for another use or discarding.
  4. In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.
  5. Add chopped green onions and half of the minced garlic; sauté until onions are wilted and garlic is fragrant, being careful not to burn.
  6. In a large bowl, combine room temperature cream cheese, sour cream, and cheddar cheese.
  7. Stir in the sautéed onion and garlic mixture until well combined and smooth.
  8. Fold in the drained artichoke hearts.
  9. Spoon the cheese mixture into the hollowed-out bread loaf.
  10. Place the reserved bread top back onto the loaf.
  11. Wrap the entire loaf tightly in double-thickness heavy-duty aluminum foil.
  12. Bake for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  13. Meanwhile, slice French rolls thinly and butter with the remaining butter and garlic.
  14. Wrap the buttered French rolls in foil and place them in the oven with the main loaf for the last 30 minutes of baking.
  15. Remove foil from the loaf and serve warm, using the toasted French roll slices for dipping.

Note

The scooped-out bread from the loaf can be dried to make breadcrumbs or used for stuffing.

Ensure cream cheese is at room temperature before mixing to achieve a smooth consistency without lumps.

Watch the garlic carefully while sautéing to prevent burning, which can make the dip bitter.

If the dip seems too thick after baking, stir in a splash of milk or extra sour cream to reach desired consistency.
