Directions
-
Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C) or Gas Mark 2.
-
In a heavy frying pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and apple, and soften for about 10 minutes.
-
Stir in the chopped almonds. Turn up the heat and add the beef mince.
-
Cook the meat until it is browned and cooked through, stirring frequently, for about 5 minutes.
-
Add the curry powder, brown sugar, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Cook for a few more minutes to blend the flavors.
-
Meanwhile, whisk the egg and milk together in a bowl. Place the crustless bread in a separate basin and pour half of the egg mixture over it. Let it soak for 5 minutes until soft.
-
Beat the soaked bread well until it forms a paste, then add it to the meat mixture and combine thoroughly.
-
Transfer the mixture into a 1-pint ovenproof dish, spreading it evenly.
-
Pour the remaining egg and milk mixture over the top of the meat.
-
Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until the top is golden and set.
Note
Storage: Allow to cool completely before covering. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for best texture.
Variations: You can add other nuts like walnuts for a different crunch, or adjust the curry powder to suit your heat preference.
Serving: Pairs excellently with mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, or a simple green salad.
