Chinese: Basic Won Ton
Description
These traditional Chinese wontons feature a savory filling of ground pork and prawns, brightened by the crunch of water chestnuts and the earthy flavor of shiitake mushrooms. The thin, delicate skins encase the mixture, creating a tender bite that is both comforting and elegant. Perfect for serving in a light broth or fried until crispy, these dumplings are a staple of home-style Chinese cooking. They require a bit of patience to fold, but the result is a satisfying dish that brings restaurant-quality flavor to your table. Ideal for family dinners or as an appetizer for gatherings.Ingredients
Directions
-
Boil the Chinese mushrooms for 10 minutes, then rinse, squeeze dry, and discard the stems.
-
Finely chop the mushroom caps into very small pieces.
-
Shell, devein, and wash the prawns, then chop them into very small pieces.
-
Peel the water chestnuts and crush them with the flat side of a cleaver, or chop them into very fine pieces if a cleaver is not available.
-
In a large bowl, combine the chopped mushrooms, prawns, water chestnuts, ground pork, and green onion.
-
Add the salt, sugar, thin soy sauce, oyster sauce, dash of pepper, cornstarch, and egg to the mixture.
-
Mix all ingredients thoroughly until well combined to create the wonton filling.
-
Place a wonton skin on a flat surface with one corner pointing toward you.
-
Place about 1 teaspoon of filling near the corner closest to you.
-
Fold the bottom corner up over the filling.
-
Fold the skin over once more to cover the filling completely, creating a small rectangle.
-
Turn the wonton so the triangular flap is facing you.
-
Dampen the left corner of the skin with a little water using your finger.
-
Swing the right corner over and press it onto the dampened left corner to seal.
-
As you seal the corners, gently pull the filling toward you with your middle finger to create a hat-like shape.
-
Repeat the process with the remaining filling and skins.
-
Bring a pot of water or broth to a boil and cook the wontons for 3-5 minutes until they float to the surface.
-
Serve immediately in broth or as a snack.
