Chocolate Mousse Flan
Description
This Chocolate Mousse Flan is a show-stopping dessert that combines the elegance of a French mousse with the structure of a baked pastry crust. The base is a delicate chocolate shortbread, crisp and buttery, providing the perfect foundation for the light, airy filling. The mousse itself is a decadent blend of melted chocolate, whipped egg whites, and cream, resulting in a texture that is both fluffy and intensely flavorful. Topped with decorative chocolate curls and a dusting of icing sugar, it looks as impressive as it tastes. Ideal for dinner parties, holidays, or any occasion where you want to impress guests with a sophisticated, homemade treat. Serve chilled for the best texture and flavor.Ingredients
Directions
-
Prepare the pastry crust by combining 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup icing sugar, and 1 square of melted chocolate in a bowl.
-
Cut in 1/2 cup softened butter using a pastry blender or food processor until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
-
Gather the crumbs into a ball with your hands and press firmly into the bottom and up the sides of a greased 9 1/2" flan pan with a removable bottom.
-
Chill the crust in the refrigerator for 1 hour to firm up.
-
Preheat oven to 425&# 194;°F (218ðC) and bake the crust for 10 minutes, then remove and let it cool completely.
-
For the mousse filling, bring 1/2 cup whipping cream to a boil in a small saucepan.
-
Remove from heat and immediately add 5 squares of chopped chocolate and 2 tablespoons of butter, stirring until completely melted and smooth.
-
Whisk in 2 egg yolks until fully blended and the mixture is glossy.
-
In a separate clean bowl, beat egg whites until frothy, then gradually add 1/4 cup sugar, beating continuously until stiff peaks form.
-
Gently fold the whipped egg whites into the chocolate mixture in three batches, being careful not to deflate the mixture.
-
Pour the mousse into the cooled pastry crust and smooth the top.
-
Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or until set.
-
Shortly before serving, use a vegetable peeler to create coarse curls from 3 squares of chocolate and sprinkle them over the mousse.
-
Lay 3 strips of wax paper across the top of the flan as a stencil.
-
Sift a generous amount of icing sugar over the flan, covering the wax paper strips.
-
Carefully remove the wax paper to reveal a decorative striped pattern.
-
Serve chilled. Note: Do not make or serve on a hot day as the mousse may melt.
