Description

This unique German-style dessert combines the tang of sauerkraut with rich cocoa and chocolate for a moist, flavorful cake. The batter is baked in a sheet pan and topped with a smooth, creamy chocolate cream cheese frosting. It is a comforting and satisfying treat that offers a surprising twist on traditional chocolate cake.

  1. Sauerkraut should be rinsed and drained thoroughly and then chopped coarsely.

  3. Sift together the flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt;
  4. set aside.
  5. Cream together the butter and sugar in a bowl until light and fluffy, using an electric mixer
  6. set at medium speed.
  7. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  8. Beat in vanilla.
  9. Add dry ingredients alternately with water to creamed mixture, beating well after each addition.
  10. Stir in sauerkraut.
  11. Spread batter in greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch bakeing pan.
  12. Bake in a preheated 350 degree F.
  13. oven for 35 minutes or until cake tests done.
  14. Cool in pan on rack.
  15. Frost with Creamy Chocolate Frosting.
  16. Cut into squares.
  17. CREAMY CHOCOLATE FROSTING: Melt chocolate in a custard cup in hot water.
  18. Cool slightly.
  19. Combine chocolate, cream cheese, milk, confectioners' sugar, salt, and vanilla in a bowl.
  20. Beat with an electric mixer at high speed until smooth and creamy.
  21. It is also one of those recipes that is a classic but you can never find in most cookbooks.
