Description

This Cinnamon Swirl Bread is the ultimate comfort food, featuring a tender, pillowy crumb wrapped around a generous layer of aromatic cinnamon sugar. It&# 226;€™s perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a sweet treat with afternoon coffee. The dough comes together easily with pantry staples like flour, milk, and yeast, while the swirl adds a delightful chewy-sweet contrast. Serve it warm, perhaps with a pat of butter or a drizzle of icing, and watch it disappear. It’s a wonderful homemade alternative to store-bought buns and pairs beautifully with savory meals or stands alone as a dessert.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, combine 1 cup sugar and 4 teaspoons cinnamon; set aside for the swirl.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 3 cups of the all-purpose flour and the yeast.
  3. In a saucepan, warm the milk, remaining sugar, applesauce, salt, and egg whites over low heat until warm to the touch (about 115ðF).
  4. Pour the warm liquid mixture into the flour mixture and beat on high speed for 3 minutes.
  5. Stir in the remaining flour until a soft, elastic dough forms.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  7. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
  8. Punch down the dough and divide it in half.
  9. On a lightly floured surface, roll each half into a 15x7 inch rectangle.
  10. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over each rectangle, leaving a small border.
  11. Sprinkle with raisins if desired.
  12. Roll up each rectangle tightly like a jelly roll, tucking the edges under.
  13. Place rolls seam-side down in greased loaf pans.
  14. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30-40 minutes.
  15. Preheat oven to 375ðF (191ðC).
  16. Bake for 45 minutes, covering with foil after the first 30 minutes if the tops brown too quickly.
  17. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before removing to wire racks to cool completely.
