Description

These Cream Cheese Rolls combine a soft, enriched yeast dough with a sweet and tangy cream cheese filling. The rolls are braided for an attractive presentation and baked until golden brown. A simple powdered sugar glaze adds a final touch of sweetness, making them perfect for brunch or a special treat.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine sour cream and margarine over low heat. Stir constantly until the margarine is melted and the mixture is smooth. Remove from heat and stir in 1/2 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon salt.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sprinkle the active dry yeast over the warm water. Stir gently until the yeast is completely dissolved.
  3. Add the warm sour cream mixture, beaten eggs, and 4 cups of flour to the yeast mixture. Stir until the dough begins to form and becomes difficult to stir.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 3-4 minutes, adding the remaining flour as needed, until the dough is smooth and elastic. Note: This dough will be quite soft and sticky.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to coat the top. Cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap. Let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes, or until doubled in size. (Alternatively, refrigerate overnight for a slower rise.)
  6. While the dough rises, prepare the filling. In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Gradually beat in the 3/4 cup sugar until creamy.
  7. Beat in the egg, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and vanilla extract until the filling is completely smooth and well combined. Set aside.
  8. Punch down the risen dough. Turn it out onto a floured surface and divide into 8 equal pieces.
  9. On a floured surface, roll each piece of dough into an 8 x 6 inch rectangle.
  10. Spread approximately 1/8 of the cream cheese filling evenly over each rectangle, leaving a small border around the edges.
  11. Roll up each rectangle tightly, starting from the long side. Pinch the seam to seal and fold the ends under slightly.
  12. Place the rolls seam-side down on a baking sheet coated with non-stick spray.
  13. Using kitchen shears, cut each roll diagonally at 2-inch intervals, cutting about 2/3 of the way through the roll to create a braided appearance. Do not cut all the way through.
  14. Cover the rolls loosely with plastic wrap or a towel. Let them rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until they have doubled in size.
  15. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius).
  16. Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top and cooked through.
  17. While the rolls are baking, prepare the glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, vanilla, and enough milk to reach a drizzling consistency.
  18. Remove rolls from the oven and let them cool slightly. Drizzle the glaze over the warm rolls before serving.
