Description

Creme Caramel is a classic French dessert that combines a smooth, egg-rich custard with a layer of homemade caramel. The result is a delicate balance of sweet, buttery flavors and a tender, jiggly texture that melts in your mouth. This dish is perfect for dinner parties or special family gatherings, offering an elegant yet comforting end to any meal. While it requires a bit of patience to chill, the process is straightforward. The contrast between the warm caramel syrup and the cool custard creates an unforgettable dining experience that feels luxurious without being overly complicated.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350&# 194;°F (175ðC).
  2. In a 2-quart saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup sugar and 2 tablespoons water.
  3. Cook without stirring until the mixture melts and turns a light amber caramel color.
  4. Immediately pour the hot caramel into 8 individual custard cups or ramekins, tilting to coat the bottom evenly.
  5. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, egg whites, 1/2 cup sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until well blended.
  6. Slowly whisk in the milk (or cream, if using) until fully incorporated.
  7. If desired, skim any foam from the surface of the custard mixture for a smoother texture.
  8. Pour the custard mixture into the caramel-lined cups.
  9. Place the cups in a large roasting pan (17x11 inches) and fill the pan with boiling water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the cups.
  10. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the centers are just set and a knife inserted comes out clean.
  11. Remove the cups from the water bath and let them cool to room temperature.
  12. Refrigerate the custards for at least 2 hours, or until completely chilled.
  13. To serve, run a small spatula around the edge of each custard to loosen it.
  14. Invert each custard onto a dessert plate, allowing the caramel sauce to flow over the top.
