Description

This French Herb Bread is a savory twist on classic white bread, infused with the familiar flavors of ranch seasoning. The dough is enriched with buttermilk and shortening, resulting in a tender crumb with a crisp, golden crust. The combination of yeast, flour, and dried herbs creates an aromatic loaf that is perfect for dipping in soups or serving alongside hearty stews. It requires minimal effort but yields impressive results, making it an excellent choice for weeknight dinners or potlucks. The bread stays fresh for several days if stored properly, and the herbaceous flavor profile complements both casual sandwiches and elegant meal presentations.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, dry yeast, and 3 teaspoons of the ranch dressing mix. Reserve the remaining ranch mix for later use.
  2. In a separate container, heat the buttermilk, water, and shortening until warm (120-130&# 194;°F). The shortening does not need to fully melt.
  3. Pour the warm liquid mixture into the flour mixture.
  4. Add the egg to the bowl.
  5. Beat the mixture at medium speed for 3 minutes until smooth and well-combined.
  6. Gradually add enough of the remaining flour to form a firm dough.
  7. Turn the dough out onto a well-floured surface and knead for 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  8. Place the dough in a greased bowl and turn to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 20 minutes.
  9. Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal parts.
  10. On a lightly floured surface, roll or pat each part into a 12x7 inch rectangle.
  11. Starting with the longer side, roll each rectangle up tightly, sealing the edges and ends.
  12. Place the loaves seam-side down on a greased cookie sheet.
  13. Make diagonal slashes about 2 inches apart across the tops of the loaves.
  14. Cover and let rise in a warm place until light and doubled in size, about 30 minutes.
  15. Bake in a preheated 375ðF (191ðC) oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  16. While the bread is still warm, brush with melted butter and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of the reserved ranch dressing mix.
  17. Cool completely on wire racks before slicing.

Note

Store leftover bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze for longer storage.

You can substitute buttermilk with milk mixed with a tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar. If you prefer, use olive oil instead of shortening for a different flavor profile.

Ensure the liquids are warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast. For a stronger herb flavor, add fresh chopped parsley, dill, or chives along with the ranch mix.
