Fruechte Brot
Description
This traditional German fruit bread is packed with dried pears, apricots, plums, and dates, along with warm spices like cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom. Kneaded with a touch of Kirschwasser (cherry brandy), it bakes into a dense, flavorful loaf perfect for holiday tables or cozy mornings. Simple to prepare with common pantry ingredients, this bread offers a rich, comforting taste that pairs well with butter or cheese.Directions
-
1. Cube the pears, apricots, plums, and oranges. Chop the walnuts.
-
2. Break up the yeast and mix with 1 teaspoon of the sugar and the warm water. Cover and let stand in a warm place for 10 minutes until foamy.
-
3. Melt the butter and mix with the salt and flour.
-
4. Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and knead until smooth and elastic.
-
5. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
-
6. Mix the raisins, remaining sugar, grated orange peel, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, cardamom, Kirschwasser, dried fruits, and walnuts.
-
7. Knead the fruit and nut mixture into the risen dough.
-
8. Form the dough into a loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
-
9. Preheat oven to 200°C (392°F). Bake for 75 minutes until the crust is deep golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
