Description

These fudgy brownies deliver an intensely chocolatey flavor with a unique twist. The combination of unsweetened cocoa powder and a touch of Kahlua creates a deep, complex taste profile that feels sophisticated yet comforting. Peanut butter adds a subtle nutty richness and helps create a dense, moist texture, while applesauce ensures the brownies stay tender without excess fat. The result is a decadent dessert that balances sweet and savory notes perfectly.

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Spray an 8x8 inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. In a medium bowl, sift together the cocoa powder, flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a small microwave-safe bowl, combine the peanut butter and Kahlua. Microwave on high for 15-20 seconds until warm and easily stirrable. Stir until smooth.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm peanut butter mixture with the sugar. Mix until combined; it may appear slightly crumbly.
  5. Add the egg whites (or egg replacer equivalent), applesauce, and vanilla extract to the sugar mixture. Whisk vigorously until smooth and well incorporated.
  6. Add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredient mixture. Stir gently until just combined and no dry streaks remain. Do not overmix.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Smooth the top with a spatula.
  8. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs attached (not wet batter).
  9. Allow brownies to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before cutting into squares.
