Description

This luxurious three-layer chocolate cake is a showstopper for any celebration. The dense, moist crumb is deeply flavored with melted unsweetened chocolate and infused with the smooth, aromatic notes of Godiva liqueur. Between each layer, a generous spread of silky buttercream frosting, also spiked with liqueur, adds a creamy counterpoint to the dense cake. The result is an intensely chocolatey dessert that balances sweetness with sophisticated flavor. Perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, or holiday gatherings, this cake requires patience but rewards you with an unforgettable experience. Serve chilled for the best texture and allow the liqueur to enhance the chocolate profile.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375F (190C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. For the cake batter, sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream the 6 ounces of softened butter and the sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  5. Stir in the melted unsweetened chocolate until fully incorporated.
  6. Reduce mixer speed to low. Gradually add the sifted flour mixture in three additions, alternating with the buttermilk and 1/2 cup of the Godiva Liqueur.
  7. Begin and end with the flour mixture, beating just until smooth after each addition. Do not overmix.
  8. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans.
  9. Bake for 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
  10. Remove cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes.
  11. Invert the cakes onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  12. While the cakes cool, prepare the buttercream. In a large bowl, beat the remaining 1 cup of softened butter until smooth and creamy.
  13. Sift the confectioner's sugar and cocoa powder together over the butter to avoid lumps.
  14. Add the remaining 1/3 cup of Godiva Liqueur to the butter mixture.
  15. Mix on low speed, gradually increasing to high, until the frosting is smooth, light, and fluffy.
  16. Place the cooled cake layers in the freezer for about 30 minutes to firm up, which makes them easier to handle and less crumbly.
  17. Remove the cake layers from the freezer. Brush the top of each layer lightly with any remaining Godiva Liqueur if desired, for extra moisture.
  18. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread approximately 3/4 cup of the buttercream frosting over the top.
  19. Repeat with the second layer. Place the third layer on top.
  20. Spread the remaining buttercream over the top and sides of the cake, smoothing with a spatula.
  21. Garnish the top of the cake with shaved chocolate.
  22. If refrigerating, remove the cake from the fridge 1 hour before serving to allow it to come to room temperature for the best flavor and texture.

Note

Storage: Store the cake covered at room temperature for up to 2 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Allow to come to room temperature before serving.

Substitutions: If you prefer a non-alcoholic version, substitute the Godiva Liqueur with strong brewed coffee or chocolate milk for the cake batter, and water or milk for the frosting.

Tip: Ensure the butter is truly softened (room temperature) for both the cake and the frosting to achieve a smooth, creamy consistency. If the butter is too cold, it won't cream properly; if too warm, the frosting may be greasy.

Variation: Add chopped nuts or chocolate chips to the buttercream for extra texture.
