Description

Indulge in the decadent depths of this Godiva Ultimate Chocolate Layer Cake, a showstopper dessert that combines moist, dense chocolate sponge with a luxurious buttercream frosting. The secret lies in the infusion of Godiva liqueur, which adds a sophisticated, aromatic complexity to both the cake layers and the frosting. This recipe is perfect for celebrations, holidays, or any occasion calling for a truly memorable treat. The combination of melted chocolate in the batter and cocoa powder in the frosting creates a dual-texture experience that is both smooth and intensely flavorful.

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. For the cake batter: In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream the 6 oz of softened butter and the granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  5. Stir in the melted unsweetened chocolate until fully incorporated.
  6. With the mixer on low speed, alternately add the flour mixture and the buttermilk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
  7. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  8. Bake for 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.
  10. For the buttercream: In a large bowl, beat the 1 cup of softened butter until smooth and creamy.
  11. Gradually add the sifted confectioner's sugar and cocoa powder, beating on low speed until incorporated.
  12. Add 1/3 cup of Godiva liqueur and beat on high speed until smooth and fluffy.
  13. Place the cooled cake layers in the freezer for about 3 minutes to firm up, making them easier to handle.
  14. Remove cakes from freezer. Place one layer on a serving plate. Brush with half of the remaining Godiva liqueur.
  15. Spread approximately 3/4 cup of the buttercream frosting over the top of the first layer.
  16. Place the second cake layer on top. Brush with the remaining Godiva liqueur.
  17. Spread the remaining buttercream over the top and sides of the cake, smoothing as desired.
  18. Garnish with shaved chocolate. Serve immediately or refrigerate.
