Description

These Good Old American White Rolls are the ultimate comfort food side dish, featuring a tender crumb and a soft, pillowy texture that melts in your mouth. Made with simple pantry staples like flour, yeast, and a touch of honey, they offer a subtle sweetness that pairs perfectly with savory meals. The addition of nonfat dry milk adds richness and helps achieve that perfect golden-brown crust without heavy fats. Ideal for holiday dinners, Sunday suppers, or just a cozy weeknight meal, these rolls bring everyone together around the table. Fresh from the oven, they are irresistible brushed with a hint of honey and butter, making them a crowd-pleasing staple you will want to make again and again.

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 2 1/2 cups of flour, yeast, sugar, nonfat dry milk, and salt.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients well to ensure even distribution.
  3. In a saucepan, heat water and oil together until they reach 120°F (49°C).
  4. Pour the warm water and oil mixture into the dry flour mixture.
  5. Blend at low speed until the ingredients are just moistened and a shaggy dough forms.
  6. Increase the mixer speed to medium and beat the dough for 3 minutes to develop gluten.
  7. By hand, gradually add enough remaining flour to form a firm, slightly tacky dough.
  8. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 to 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  9. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for 25 minutes (for quick-rise yeast) or until doubled in size.
  10. Punch down the dough to release excess air.
  11. Divide the dough into two equal parts.
  12. Divide each part into 6 to 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a smooth ball.
  13. Place the shaped rolls on a greased cookie sheet, leaving space between them for expansion.
  14. Cover the rolls and let them rise for 15 to 20 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  15. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C).
  16. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown.
  17. Mix melted butter and honey together and brush the mixture over the hot rolls immediately after baking.
  18. Remove from the cookie sheets and let cool slightly before serving.
