These Greenwich Village Brownstone Brownies are the ultimate indulgence for chocolate lovers, offering a dense, fudgy texture that rivals any bakery in the city. Made with high-quality unsweetened chocolate and a generous amount of butter, they deliver a deep, robust cocoa flavor balanced by the warmth of toasted pecans. The combination of white sugar and packed brown sugar creates a complex sweetness, while light corn syrup ensures the brownies remain moist and chewy rather than cakey. Perfect for holiday gatherings, potlucks, or a quiet evening treat with coffee, these brownies are a crowd-pleaser. They require a bit of patience as they bake slowly to develop their signature dense crumb, but the result is a sophisticated dessert that feels both nostalgic and elegant.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F (175C).
  2. Butter an 8-inch square baking pan.
  3. Line the bottom of the pan with wax paper or parchment paper, then butter and lightly flour the paper.
  4. Melt the unsweetened chocolate in the top of a double boiler over hot water, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  5. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until light and fluffy.
  6. Beat in the vanilla, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and corn syrup until well combined.
  7. Add the eggs one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition.
  8. Slowly beat in the melted chocolate, flour, salt, and 1 cup of the pecans until just combined.
  9. Spoon the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  10. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of pecans over the top.
  11. Bake for about 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out fairly clean.
  12. Cool in the pan on a wire rack for 30 minutes.
  13. Place another wire rack over the pan and carefully invert the brownies onto it.
  14. Remove the pan and peel off the paper lining.
  15. Invert the brownies back onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  16. Chill the brownies for about 30 minutes before cutting into bars.
