Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350&# 194;°F (175ðC). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. For the cake batter, whisk together 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp baking soda, and 1/4 tsp salt in a large bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream together 1/2 cup softened butter and 2 cups sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in 2 eggs, one at a time, then mix in 1 tsp vanilla extract.
  5. Alternately add the dry ingredients and 1 1/3 cups milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
  6. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.
  8. For the buttercream ribbon, beat 8 oz softened cream cheese and 1/4 cup sugar until smooth.
  9. Beat in 1 egg, 3 tbsp milk, 2 tbsp softened butter, 1 tbsp cornstarch, and 1/2 tsp vanilla extract until fluffy.
  10. Once cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread half of the buttercream mixture evenly over the top.
  11. Place the second cake layer on top of the frosting and spread the remaining buttercream over it.
  12. Top with the final cake layer. Optionally, frost the outside with additional chocolate frosting if desired, or leave as a naked cake style.
  13. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the layers to set before slicing and serving.

Note

Ensure all dairy ingredients (butter, cream cheese, milk, eggs) are at room temperature before mixing to ensure a smooth, lump-free batter and frosting.

For best results, use a scale to divide the batter evenly among the pans to ensure uniform baking.

The cake can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Bring to room temperature for 30 minutes before serving for optimal texture.

If you prefer a sweeter filling, you can add an extra tablespoon of sugar to the buttercream ribbon.
