Hawaiian Rolls
Description
These homemade Hawaiian rolls are incredibly soft, slightly sweet, and rich with buttery flavor. Made with egg yolks and a hint of sugar, they have a tender crumb that melts in your mouth. The signature glaze of melted butter and sugar adds a delicious crunch and shine. Perfect as a side for pot roast, chicken, or pulled pork sandwiches, these rolls bring a touch of aloha to any table. They are easy to make from scratch and far superior to store-bought versions. Enjoy them warm, straight from the oven, for the best texture and taste.Ingredients
Directions
-
In a medium bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water.
-
Stir in 1 1/2 teaspoons of sugar and let sit until foamy, about 5-10 minutes.
-
Add 1 cup of flour to the yeast mixture and stir until smooth.
-
Cover the bowl and let the sponge rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 30-45 minutes.
-
While the sponge rises, cream together 1/2 cup softened butter and 1/2 cup sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
-
Beat in the egg yolks and milk until well combined.
-
Stir in the salt and the remaining 4 cups of flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
-
Add the risen yeast sponge to the flour mixture and mix until fully blended.
-
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
-
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 10 minutes.
-
Punch down the dough and roll it out to a 1/4 inch thickness.
-
Cut the dough into 4" by 8" rectangles.
-
Brush each rectangle lightly with some of the melted butter.
-
Stretch each rectangle slightly into a 10" strip, then twist and coil into a 1 1/2" circle shape.
-
Place the coiled rolls into greased tart pans or muffin tins.
-
Cover and let rise again until doubled in bulk, about 30-45 minutes.
-
Preheat oven to 350F (175C) and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
-
Immediately after baking, brush each roll with the remaining melted butter and sprinkle with the additional 1/4 cup sugar.

Note
For best results, ensure water temperature is between 110-120F to activate yeast without killing it.
If using a stand mixer, use the dough hook for kneading.
These rolls can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or frozen for longer storage.
