Description

Celebrate with this classic American chocolate sheet cake, designed to resemble the flag with blue vanilla frosting and fresh strawberry stripes. The cake itself is rich and moist, made with cocoa and buttermilk for a tender crumb and deep chocolate flavor. Topped with creamy vanilla frosting, it offers a perfect balance of sweetness and texture. This dessert is ideal for Fourth of July parties, barbecues, or any summer gathering where you want to add a touch of festive flair. It serves a crowd easily and looks impressive with minimal effort. The combination of dark chocolate and bright red strawberries creates a visually striking and delicious finale to your holiday meal. Simple ingredients come together to make a memorable treat that everyone will love.

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and flour a 15-1/2 x 10-1/2 x 1-inch jelly roll pan.
  3. In a small bowl, stir together cocoa and boiling water until smooth; set aside.
  4. In a large bowl, beat shortening, sugar, vanilla, and eggs until light and fluffy.
  5. In a separate bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and salt.
  6. Add the flour mixture alternately with buttermilk to the shortening mixture, beating well after each addition.
  7. Stir in the cocoa mixture until fully combined.
  8. Spread batter evenly into the prepared pan.
  9. Bake for 28 to 30 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  10. Cool in pan on a wire rack completely before frosting.
  11. Remove about 3/4 cup of vanilla frosting to a small bowl.
  12. Add blue food coloring to half of the reserved frosting (about 1/2 cup) and mix until desired shade of blue is reached.
  13. Set aside the blue frosting and the remaining 1/4 cup of plain vanilla frosting.
  14. Spread the remaining large amount of vanilla frosting evenly over the top of the cooled cake.
  15. Spread the blue frosting in the upper left corner of the cake to create the flag's canton.
  16. Pipe stars into the blue field using the reserved 1/4 cup of plain vanilla frosting.
  17. Shortly before serving, arrange strawberry pieces in seven horizontal rows across the remaining white frosting to represent the red stripes.
