They are easy to prepare, requiring just a little patience for rising, but the result is a delicious, fresh-baked bread that tastes far superior to store-bought alternatives. Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water, milk, and melted margarine until the fat is fully incorporated and the mixture is lukewarm (about 110F).
  2. Sprinkle the yeast over the liquid mixture and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy and active.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, salt, and 1 1/2 cups of the all-purpose flour.
  4. Pour the yeast mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  5. Gradually add the remaining 3 1/2 cups of flour, one half cup at a time, mixing until the dough becomes stiff and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth, elastic, and no longer sticky.
  7. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  8. Punch down the dough to release air bubbles, then turn it out onto a floured surface.
  9. Divide the dough into equal portions and shape each piece into a smooth round roll.
  10. Place the rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them about 1 inch apart.
  11. Cover the rolls loosely with a towel and let them rise again for 30-45 minutes until puffy.
  12. Preheat the oven to 350F (175C).
  13. Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  14. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving.

Note

Storage: Store cooled rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in a warm oven for 5 minutes to restore freshness.

Ingredient Substitutions: You can substitute unsalted butter for the margarine for a richer flavor. Whole milk provides a softer texture than skim milk.

Kneading Tip: If the dough feels too sticky, add a tablespoon of flour at a time. If it feels too dry and crumbly, add a teaspoon of warm water.

Rising Environment: If your kitchen is cold, turn the oven on to its lowest setting for a minute, turn it off, and place the covered bowl inside to help the dough rise.

Bread Variation: To make a loaf instead of rolls, shape the dough into a loaf pan after the first rise, let it rise again until it crests the pan, and bake at 375F for 30-35 minutes.
