Description

This large-batch coffee recipe is designed for feeding a crowd without sacrificing flavor. Using a traditional cloth sack method, it allows for easy straining and consistent strength. The result is a smooth, clean cup that avoids the bitterness often found in over-extracted batch brews. Ideal for office meetings, family breakfasts, or holiday gatherings, this method ensures everyone gets a fresh cup. It highlights the natural notes of the beans while remaining approachable for all palates. A reliable, no-fuss way to serve quality coffee to many guests at once.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Boil the filtered water in a large kettle or pot.
  2. Place the ground coffee into the clean cotton cloth or coffee bag.
  3. Tie the cloth tightly to create a secure sack that will not tear.
  4. Suspend the coffee sack in the boiling water using a hook or tie it to the kettle handle so it hangs just above the bottom.
  5. Let the coffee steep for 10 to 15 minutes, depending on desired strength.
  6. Remove the sack from the water and allow it to drip dry into the kettle.
  7. Discard the grounds and serve the coffee immediately.

Note

For larger quantities, scale the ratio: use 2/3 cup of ground coffee per quart of water.

Ensure the cloth sack is thoroughly rinsed before use to remove any lint or detergent residue.

This method produces a cleaner cup than French press, as the cloth filters out fine oils and sediment.

Keep the brewed coffee warm in a thermal carafe; do not keep it on a hot plate as this can scorch the flavor.
