Description

This luxurious cold-process soap bar combines the gentle cleansing properties of olive oil and coconut oil with the rich conditioning benefits of rendered fat. Infused with finely ground lavender and aromatic cinnamon, it offers a spa-like experience right from your bathroom shelf. The lavender provides a calming floral scent, while the cinnamon adds a subtle, warming spice note. Perfect for relaxation after a long day, this soap creates a creamy lather that is both moisturizing and invigorating. It makes a thoughtful, handmade gift for friends and family who appreciate natural skincare products. The recipe yields a substantial batch, allowing for several weeks of use or multiple gift bars.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Put on rubber gloves, safety glasses, and a face mask. Ensure you have a well-ventilated area and a cup of white vinegar nearby as a safety precaution.
  2. Place the cold water in the 2-quart lye-proof pot.
  3. Very slowly add the lye crystals to the water, stirring constantly until fully dissolved. The water temperature will rise to around 150 degrees F.
  4. Place a thermometer in the lye solution and allow it to cool to between 95 and 98 degrees F.
  5. While the lye solution cools, combine the rendered fat, olive oil, and coconut oil in the 8-quart lye-proof pot.
  6. Slowly heat the oils until they reach a temperature of 95 to 98 degrees F.
  7. Once both the lye solution and the oils are within the 95 to 98 degrees F range, slowly pour the lye solution into the oils while stirring constantly.
  8. Beat the mixture gently with a hand eggbeater until it reaches the consistency of thick honey (trace). Avoid splashing.
  9. Stir in the finely ground lavender and ground cinnamon until evenly distributed.
  10. Pour the mixture into prepared molds.
  11. Cover the molds with a blanket and set aside in a safe place away from children and pets to dry for 36 hours.
  12. After 36 hours, carefully turn the soap out of the molds and place in a dry, airy location to cure for at least two weeks.

Note

Safety First: Lye (sodium hydroxide) is caustic and can cause severe burns. Always wear protective gear and work in a well-ventilated area. Keep vinegar nearby to neutralize any spills on skin.

Ingredient Sourcing: Buy pure lye crystals or flakes, not liquid drain cleaners. Red Devil is a common brand. Purchase coconut oil from health food stores and dried lavender from herb or craft shops.

Curing Process: The soap must cure for at least two weeks to become mild and hard. A fine white powder (sodium carbonate or "ash") may appear on the surface; wash it off before use as it can dry the skin.

Storage: Store the finished bars in a dry, airy place to prevent them from becoming soft or developing rancidity.
