Note
Safety First: Lye (sodium hydroxide) is caustic and can cause severe burns. Always wear protective gear and work in a well-ventilated area. Keep vinegar nearby to neutralize any spills on skin.
Ingredient Sourcing: Buy pure lye crystals or flakes, not liquid drain cleaners. Red Devil is a common brand. Purchase coconut oil from health food stores and dried lavender from herb or craft shops.
Curing Process: The soap must cure for at least two weeks to become mild and hard. A fine white powder (sodium carbonate or "ash") may appear on the surface; wash it off before use as it can dry the skin.
Storage: Store the finished bars in a dry, airy place to prevent them from becoming soft or developing rancidity.
