Description

This traditional brown soda bread is a comforting staple that brings warmth to any table. Made with a blend of whole-wheat and white flours, it offers a perfect balance of nutty depth and soft texture. The addition of soft butter creates a rich, tender crumb, while buttermilk provides the necessary acidity for the baking soda to activate, resulting in a light yet substantial loaf. Topped with sunflower seeds for a pleasant crunch, this bread is incredibly easy to prepare with pantry staples. It pairs beautifully with soups, stews, or simply slathered with extra butter and jam. A timeless recipe that delivers home-style flavor and satisfaction in every slice.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400&# 194;°F (200ðC).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole-wheat flour, plain white flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda.
  3. Add the soft butter to the dry ingredients and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
  4. Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the buttermilk.
  5. Mix quickly with a fork or your hands until a soft dough forms; do not overwork the dough.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a round loaf or cake.
  7. Place the loaf on a baking sheet and sprinkle the top generously with sunflower seeds.
  8. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  9. To test for doneness, insert a long wooden skewer into the center; it should come out clean.
  10. Remove from the oven and transfer the bread to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Note

This recipe was originally given to Marie Deering by her mother. The sunflower seeds are a modern addition that adds a nice crunch.

Storage: Store leftover bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze slices for longer storage.

Tip: Handle the dough as little as possible to keep the bread tender. Overworking can make it tough.

Variation: You can omit the sunflower seeds if preferred, or substitute with sesame seeds or oats.
