Description

These tender, bite-sized meatballs combine ground beef and pork for a rich, savory flavor profile, enhanced with aromatic allspice and ginger. Soaked in milk to ensure moisture, they are simmered gently before being baked in a delicious brown sugar and beef broth glaze. The result is a juicy, flavorful appetizer or main dish that captures the warmth of home-style cooking. Perfect for holiday gatherings, potlucks, or a cozy weeknight dinner, these meatballs offer a comforting balance of sweet and savory notes that pair beautifully with mashed potatoes or crisp vegetables.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the bread crumbs and milk; let stand for 5 minutes until the milk is fully absorbed.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, soaked bread crumbs, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice, 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger, 1 finely chopped small onion, and 1 slightly beaten egg. Mix gently until just blended.
  3. Shape the meat mixture into balls approximately 1 inch in diameter.
  4. Bring 2 quarts of water to a boil in a large saucepan. Add 2 teaspoons of salt to the water.
  5. Drop the meatballs into the boiling water. Reduce heat to a simmer, cover, and cook for 15 minutes.
  6. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  7. In a small saucepan, combine 6 tablespoons brown sugar, 1/2 cup concentrated beef broth, and 2 tablespoons melted butter. Stir and heat over medium heat until the brown sugar is completely dissolved to form a smooth glaze.
  8. Drain the meatballs and place them in a single layer in a 13x9 inch baking dish.
  9. Spoon the brown sugar glaze evenly over the meatballs.
  10. Bake uncovered for 30 minutes, shaking the pan gently to turn the meatballs after every 10 minutes of baking to ensure even glazing.

Note

For best results, use fresh ground beef and pork rather than pre-packaged mixes for better texture and flavor control.

If you prefer a thicker glaze, increase the amount of brown sugar slightly or simmer the glaze longer before pouring over the meatballs.

These meatballs can be served warm or at room temperature, making them an excellent choice for buffets.

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in the oven or microwave.

To make ahead, you can boil and glaze the meatballs, then freeze them on a baking sheet before transferring to a freezer bag. Bake from frozen, adding 10-15 minutes to the baking time.
