Do not lift the lid while the dumplings are steaming, as this will release the steam and prevent them from cooking through properly.
The dumplings are done when they no longer look wet on top and feel firm to the touch.
For a richer flavor, you can substitute half of the milk with melted butter or use buttermilk instead of regular milk.
These dumplings are best eaten immediately after cooking; they do not reheat well and can become rubbery if stored.
Make sure there is enough space between each dumpling on the surface of the stew, as they will expand significantly during steaming.
