No Fry Doughnut
Description
Enjoy the comfort of fresh doughnuts without the mess of frying. These baked doughnuts are incredibly soft, fluffy, and lightly sweetened with a warm hint of nutmeg and optional cinnamon. Made with simple pantry staples like yeast, milk, and flour, they rise beautifully before baking to a golden brown. They are perfect for breakfast, an afternoon snack, or a dessert for special occasions. Serve them warm with a dusting of sugar or a drizzle of glaze for a homemade indulgence that feels like a hug in every bite.Ingredients
Directions
-
In a large mixer bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in the warm water.
-
Add the scalded lukewarm milk, sugar, salt, nutmeg, cinnamon, eggs, shortening, and 2 cups of flour to the yeast mixture.
-
Blend the mixture for 1/2 minute at medium speed, scraping the bowl occasionally.
-
Stir in the remaining flour until the dough is smooth, scraping the sides of the bowl.
-
Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, about 50 to 60 minutes.
-
Turn the dough out onto a well-floured cloth-covered board and roll it lightly to coat with flour.
-
Using a floured rolling pin, gently roll the soft dough out to about 1/2 inch thickness.
-
Cut the dough into circles using a floured 2-1/2 inch doughnut cutter.
-
Lift the doughnuts carefully with a spatula and place them 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet.
-
Brush the doughnuts with melted butter.
-
Cover the doughnuts and let them rise until doubled in size, about 20 minutes.
-
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit (218&# 194;°C).
-
Bake the doughnuts for 8 to 10 minutes or until they are golden brown.
-
Immediately brush the baked doughnuts with melted butter and toss in sugar or cinnamon sugar squares, or spread with glaze.

Note
Ensure the milk and water are lukewarm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast. Scalding the milk helps tenderize the dough.
If the dough is too sticky to handle, add a little more flour; if it's too dry, add a splash of milk. The dough should be soft but manageable.
For best results, use a doughnut cutter. You can also use a small glass or cookie cutter. The leftover dough scraps can be re-rolled and cut again.
Store any leftover doughnuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. They can also be frozen for longer storage.
