Oatmeal Burger Buns
Description
These oatmeal burger buns offer a wonderful rustic texture and a subtle sweetness from molasses and brown sugar. The combination of whole wheat and white flour creates a sturdy bun that holds up well to juicy burgers without falling apart. The oatmeal adds a hearty chew and a nutty flavor profile, while the dairy-free margarine ensures they are suitable for vegan diets. Perfect for summer BBQs, potlucks, or a cozy weeknight dinner, these homemade buns elevate any sandwich.Directions
-
In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of molasses. Stir gently to dissolve.
-
Let the yeast mixture stand in a warm place for 5-10 minutes until it becomes bubbly and foamy.
-
Meanwhile, in a large mixing bowl, combine the remaining molasses, margarine, salt, brown sugar, and oatmeal.
-
Pour the boiling water over the oatmeal mixture and stir until the margarine is completely melted and the mixture is well combined.
-
Allow the oatmeal mixture to cool until it is lukewarm to the touch (about 100-110°F).
-
Stir in the cool water and the activated yeast mixture into the cooled oatmeal mixture.
-
Gradually add the flours, one cup at a time, stirring vigorously with a wooden spoon or mixing the dough until it becomes too stiff to stir.
-
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
-
Knead the dough for 5-8 minutes, adding more flour as needed if it sticks, until the dough is smooth, elastic, and springs back when pressed.
-
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, turning to coat the top with grease. Cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap.
-
Let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
-
Punch the dough down to release air bubbles.
-
Divide the dough into 16 equal pieces.
-
Shape each piece into a smooth ball by tucking the edges underneath.
-
Place the balls on greased baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Flatten them slightly with your palm.
-
Cover the buns loosely with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel.
-
Let the buns rise again for 30-40 minutes, until they are puffy and doubled in size.
-
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
-
Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
-
Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before serving.
