Description

This elegant twist on classic French toast combines the comforting richness of egg-soaked bread with the bright, aromatic zest of fresh orange juice and vanilla. The addition of toasted sesame seeds adds a delightful nutty crunch and visual appeal, transforming a simple brunch staple into a sophisticated treat. Perfect for weekend mornings or special occasions, this dish balances sweet and savory notes beautifully. The bread becomes custardy on the inside while developing a golden, crisp exterior. It&# 226;€™s an indulgent way to use up slightly stale French or Italian bread, turning leftovers into a memorable meal that feels both rustic and refined.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a large bowl or shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, grated orange rind, orange juice, and vanilla until smooth and well combined.
  2. Pour half of the egg mixture into a buttered 13x9-inch baking dish.
  3. Arrange the bread slices in the dish, trimming if necessary to fit. Ensure they are fully submerged or coated in the mixture.
  4. Pour the remaining egg mixture over the bread slices to ensure they are thoroughly soaked.
  5. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, allowing the bread to absorb the custard.
  6. Preheat a large skillet over medium-low heat. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in the skillet.
  7. Remove bread slices from the dish and sprinkle 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds over one side of the slices.
  8. Place 4 bread slices into the skillet, seeded-side down. Cook for 7 to 9 minutes, or until lightly browned and crisp.
  9. Sprinkle half of the remaining sesame seeds over the top of the cooking slices. Flip and cook the other side until golden brown.
  10. Repeat the cooking process with the remaining bread slices, adding the remaining butter if needed.
  11. Serve hot, garnished with additional orange rind strips if desired.
