Flaky, buttery layered dinner rolls with a soft, pillowy interior
Out of This World Rolls recipe image

These “Out Of This World” rolls are a classic homemade bread that delivers incredible flakiness and flavor. By rolling out the dough and layering it with butter before coiling it up, you create distinct, tender layers similar to a croissant or Danish pastry. The overnight refrigeration step allows the gluten to relax and the flavors to meld, resulting in a superior texture. Perfect for holiday dinners, Sunday brunches, or simply elevating a weeknight meal, these rolls are golden brown on the outside and incredibly soft inside. They pair beautifully with soups, stews, or as a vehicle for extra gravy.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup of the warm water and let stand for 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixer bowl, combine the dissolved yeast, beaten eggs, 2 1/2 cups flour, remaining 1 cup warm water, shortening, sugar, and salt.
  3. Beat at medium speed for 2 minutes, scraping down the sides of the bowl occasionally, until the mixture is smooth.
  4. Stir in the remaining 2 cups of flour using a wooden spoon until a soft dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add up to 1/2 cup more flour as needed.
  5. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk, approximately 1 hour.
  6. Punch down the dough to release air bubbles, then cover tightly and refrigerate overnight.
  7. About 3 hours before baking, remove the dough from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to soften slightly.
  8. Divide the dough in half on a lightly floured surface. Roll each half into a rectangle approximately 1/2 inch thick.
  9. Spread softened butter evenly over the surface of each dough rectangle.
  10. Starting with the long side, tightly roll up each rectangle into a log (jelly-roll style).
  11. Cut each log into 1-inch slices.
  12. Place slices in greased muffin pan cups, with the spiral side facing down.
  13. Cover the pans and let the rolls rise for 2 to 3 hours until doubled in size.
  14. Bake in a preheated 400F (204C) oven for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
