Ingredients

Directions

  1. Wash and hull the strawberries, then cut them in half.
  2. Trim the ends off the orange, quarter it lengthwise, and slice the wedges crosswise into thin pieces, leaving the rind on.
  3. Place the strawberry halves and orange slices in a large mixing bowl and toss gently to combine.
  4. In a small cup or bowl, mix together the orange juice and sweet vermouth.
  5. Drizzle the vermouth mixture evenly over the fruit.
  6. Toss the fruit gently to ensure all pieces are coated with the liquid.
  7. Taste a strawberry and orange slice. If desired, add a sugar substitute equivalent to 1 tablespoon of sugar for extra sweetness, then toss again.
  8. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap or a lid and refrigerate for 2 hours, stirring gently every 30 minutes to blend the flavors.

Note

The orange rind adds a nice texture and a hint of bitter aroma, but if you prefer a softer texture, you can peel the orange before slicing.

If you do not have sweet vermouth, you can substitute with a splash of orange liqueur, Marsala wine, or simply increase the orange juice and add a little honey or maple syrup.

For a non-alcoholic version, omit the vermouth and use only orange juice, perhaps with a splash of lemon juice for brightness.

This dish is best served chilled. It can be prepared up to 4 hours in advance, but the fruit will become very soft if left longer.
