Description

This Pimiento Cheese Bread is a comforting, savory twist on classic homemade bread. The dough is enriched with a smooth mixture of melted sharp cheddar, sweet pimientos, and aromatic herbs like marjoram and thyme, creating a loaf that is both visually striking and deeply flavorful. The result is a tender crumb with pockets of gooey cheese and a golden, buttery crust. It is perfect for a cozy dinner side, a holiday appetizer board, or simply enjoyed warm with a slice of butter.

Directions

  1. Combine the first 3 tablespoons flour, sugar, salt, marjoram, thyme, and 1 cup milk in a medium saucepan.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture is thickened and smooth.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in the sharp cheddar cheese and pimientos until the cheese is completely melted.
  4. Allow the cheese mixture to cool until it is lukewarm (105 to 115 degrees F).
  5. Dissolve the yeast in the warm water and add it to the cooled cheese mixture.
  6. Gradually add 3 cups of the remaining flour, beating at medium speed with an electric mixer until the dough is smooth.
  7. Stir in enough of the remaining flour to form a stiff dough.
  8. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 to 10 minutes.
  9. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning to grease the top.
  10. Cover and let rise in a warm place, free from drafts, for 1 hour or until doubled in bulk.
  11. Punch the dough down and shape it into a loaf.
  12. Place the loaf in a greased 9x5x3-inch loaf pan.
  13. Cover and let rise again for 1 hour or until doubled in bulk.
  14. Brush the top of the loaf with the remaining 1 tablespoon of melted butter.
  15. Bake at 350 degrees F (177°C) for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
  16. Remove the loaf from the pan and cool on a wire rack.
