Pop Up Bread
Description
This Pop Up Bread is a comforting, homemade loaf that combines the richness of cheddar cheese with the soft, fluffy texture of yeast dough. Baked in greased coffee cans, the bread rises high and forms a distinctive crown. It is an ideal side dish for soups, stews, or sandwiches, offering a warm, savory flavor that pairs perfectly with butter or jam. Simple to prepare with pantry staples, this recipe yields two generous loaves that are perfect for family dinners or potlucks. The crust is golden and slightly crisp, while the interior remains tender and moist.Ingredients
Directions
-
In a large bowl, combine 1.5 cups of flour and the active dry yeast.
-
In a separate medium bowl or saucepan, heat the milk, water, vegetable oil, sugar, and salt until warm (about 110&# 194;°F), stirring to dissolve the sugar and salt.
-
Pour the warm liquid mixture into the flour and yeast mixture. Add the beaten eggs and shredded cheddar cheese.
-
Beat with an electric mixer or by hand until the batter is smooth and well-combined.
-
Stir in the remaining 3 cups of flour until a stiff, thick batter forms.
-
Generously grease two 1-pound coffee cans with vegetable oil or butter.
-
Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared coffee cans, filling each about halfway.
-
Cover the cans tightly with plastic lids or plastic wrap.
-
Let the bread rise in a warm, draft-free place for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the batter rises about 1/4 to 1/2 inch below the rims/lids.
-
Preheat the oven to 375ðF (190ðC).
-
Remove the lids or plastic wrap from the cans and place them on a baking sheet.
-
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
-
Remove from the oven and let the bread cool in the cans for 15 minutes.
-
Remove the bread from the cans and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
