Directions
-
Preheat your oven to 375&# 194;°F (190ðC).
-
In a large mixing bowl, combine the lukewarm water, sugar, salt, yeast, and melted shortening. Whisk until the sugar and yeast are fully dissolved.
-
Stir in 1 cup of the sifted bread flour and beat vigorously with a spoon or rotary beater until the batter is smooth and thick.
-
Add the remaining 2 1/4 cups of flour, stirring until the dough becomes too stiff to stir with a spoon.
-
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 5-7 minutes until the dough is smooth, elastic, and springs back when touched.
-
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 45-60 minutes, or until doubled in size.
-
Punch the dough down to release air bubbles. Turn it out onto a floured surface and divide into 18 equal pieces.
-
Shape each piece into a smooth ball by tucking the edges underneath. Place the rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a lightly greased pan.
-
Cover the rolls loosely and let them rise again for 15-20 minutes until puffy.
-
Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown on top and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
-
Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes before serving.
