Ingredients

Directions

  1. Rinse 1 cup of long-grain rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.
  2. Combine the rinsed rice and 1 1/2 cups of water in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid, and simmer for 15 minutes.
  4. Remove the pot from the heat and let it stand, covered, for 5 minutes to allow the rice to steam and finish cooking.
  5. Fluff the rice gently with a fork before serving.

Note

The original ingredient list included eggs and green onions, which are not standard for plain white rice. If making a savory fried rice or egg rice dish, scramble the eggs in a separate pan and fold them into the cooked rice along with the chopped green onions.

For best results, use long-grain white rice. Brown rice requires more water and a longer cooking time (about 40-45 minutes).

Do not lift the lid while the rice is simmering, as this releases steam and can result in undercooked or mushy rice.

Leftover rice can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat with a splash of water to restore moisture.
