Description

This Russian Beef Stroganoff offers a unique take on the traditional comfort food by incorporating Coca-Cola into the gravy for a subtle sweetness and depth. Tender strips of chuck or round steak are browned and then simmered until fork-tender. The sauce is thickened with flour and enriched with sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, and mushrooms. It is a hearty, satisfying main dish perfect for weeknight dinners or family gatherings. Serve it hot over creamy mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or fluffy rice for a complete meal that balances savory umami with a hint of sweet tanginess.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Cut the boneless beef into 1/2-inch strips.
  2. Place the beef strips in a plastic bag along with 3 tablespoons of flour and 1 teaspoon of salt.
  3. Shake the bag until the meat is evenly coated with the flour mixture.
  4. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil or shortening in a heavy skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  5. Add the coated meat strips to the skillet and brown slowly, stirring often.
  6. Add 1/2 cup of finely chopped onion, 1 clove of minced garlic, 1/2 cup of Coca-Cola, and 1/4 cup of water to the skillet.
  7. Stir well to combine, cover the skillet, and simmer for 30 to 45 minutes, or until the meat is fork-tender.
  8. While the meat simmers, mix 2 tablespoons of flour with 1/2 cup of water in a small bowl until smooth.
  9. Stir the flour mixture into the skillet along with 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce and 1 can of undrained mushrooms with their liquid.
  10. Continue to stir and cook the mixture for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the gravy has thickened.
  11. Reduce heat to low and stir in 1 cup of sour cream.
  12. Heat gently just until the gravy simmers; do not boil vigorously after adding sour cream.
  13. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of minced parsley and serve hot over mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice.

Note

If making this dish ahead of time, do not add the sour cream before storing. Reheat the meat and gravy mixture gently, then stir in the sour cream just before serving to prevent curdling.

For a richer flavor, you can substitute some of the water with beef broth.

Serve with egg noodles, egg roll wrappers, or mashed potatoes for an authentic experience.
