Ingredients

Directions

  1. Sift 4 cups of flour and salt into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Cut in the butter or margarine using a pastry cutter or two knives until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a separate small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk with sugar; let stand until foamy.
  4. Add the yeast mixture and slightly beaten eggs to the flour mixture.
  5. Mix vigorously with a wooden spoon until combined.
  6. Gradually add additional flour, 1/4 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
  7. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic.
  8. Place the dough in a bowl, cover tightly, and refrigerate overnight.
  9. Remove dough from refrigerator and divide into 3 equal parts.
  10. On a lightly floured surface, roll each part into a large rectangle.
  11. Spread one jar of preserves evenly over each rectangle of dough.
  12. Sprinkle the chopped nuts over the preserves.
  13. Bring up both long sides of the dough towards the center, overlapping them slightly.
  14. Pinch or tuck under the side edges to seal.
  15. Place the pastries on greased baking sheets.
  16. Bake in a preheated 350F (175C) oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  17. Remove from oven and glaze with vanilla or dust with powdered sugar.
  18. Cool on wire racks before cutting into slices.
