Description

These Scrumptious Caramel Bars are a classic American treat that balances a buttery, crumbly oat crust with a luscious layer of melted caramels and semi-sweet chocolate. The base is baked until lightly golden, then topped with a smooth caramel mixture created by melting candies with cream. A sprinkle of reserved crust crumbs and chocolate chips adds texture and visual appeal. They are perfect for potlucks, holiday gatherings, or simply satisfying a sweet tooth on a cozy afternoon. Simple ingredients come together to create a dessert that feels homemade and indulgent, offering a delightful contrast between the crisp edges and the soft, sticky center.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350&# 194;°F (175ðC). Grease an 8-inch square baking pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup flour, salt, baking soda, brown sugar, and 3/4 cup rolled oats.
  3. Cut in the margarine using a pastry blender or two forks until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Measure and set aside 1 cup of the crumb mixture for the topping.
  5. Press the remaining crumb mixture firmly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan.
  6. Bake the crust at 350ðF (177ðC) for 10 minutes. Remove from oven but keep oven on.
  7. While the crust bakes, combine caramel candies and light cream in the top of a double boiler (or a microwave-safe bowl).
  8. Cook over boiling water, stirring frequently, until caramels are completely melted and smooth. Alternatively, microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth.
  9. Stir 2 tablespoons of the all-purpose flour into the melted caramel mixture until fully incorporated.
  10. Spread the warm caramel mixture carefully over the partially baked crust.
  11. Sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate pieces evenly over the caramel layer.
  12. Sprinkle the reserved 1 cup of crumb mixture over the chocolate and caramel.
  13. Return to the oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the top is delicately browned.
  14. Cool in the pan on a wire rack for at least 20 minutes before cutting into 24 bars.

Note

Use rolled oats (old-fashioned), not instant oats, to maintain the texture of the crust.

For easier cleanup, line the bottom and sides of the baking pan with parchment paper before greasing.

Ensure the caramel mixture is fully blended with the flour before spreading to prevent a gritty texture.

These bars can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, refrigerate for up to a week.

If using unsalted margarine, you may wish to add a pinch more salt to the crust mixture.
