Description

These sesame cookies offer a delightful balance of textures, featuring a crisp exterior studded with toasted sesame seeds and a soft, buttery interior. Made with simple pantry staples like all-purpose flour, shortening, and eggs, they deliver a rich, nutty flavor that pairs perfectly with coffee or tea. The addition of vanilla extract adds a subtle aromatic sweetness, while the baking powder and soda ensure a light, airy crumb. Ideal for holiday gatherings, afternoon tea, or as a homemade gift, these cookies are easy to prepare yet impressive enough for special occasions. They hold their shape well during baking and develop a beautiful golden hue. Enjoy them fresh from the oven or store them in an airtight container for lasting freshness.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line two large cookie sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the egg yolk with 1 teaspoon of water to create an egg wash. Set aside.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the sifted all-purpose flour, baking powder, and baking soda.
  4. In a large bowl, cream together the vegetable shortening and sugar until light and fluffy.
  5. Beat in the 2 whole eggs and vanilla extract into the shortening mixture until well combined.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  7. Fold in 1/2 cup of the toasted sesame seeds into the dough.
  8. Roll the dough into small balls, about 1 inch in diameter. Place them on the prepared cookie sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  9. Roll each ball in the remaining toasted sesame seeds to coat lightly.
  10. Brush the tops of the cookies gently with the reserved egg yolk wash.
  11. Bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the bottoms are lightly golden.
  12. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
