These traditional Slovak sweet rolls feature a tender, slightly sweet yeast dough that serves as the perfect vessel for rich, spiced fillings. The choice between a crunchy walnut filling or a smooth, aromatic poppy seed paste allows for versatile flavor profiles. The dough is soft and pillowy, contrasting beautifully with the dense, sweet-nutty interior. Ideal for Sunday breakfasts, holiday gatherings, or as a special treat with coffee, these rolls capture the essence of Central European baking. They are best enjoyed fresh from the oven but hold up well for a day or two when stored properly.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Heat the milk until it is hot to the touch (scalded) but not boiling, then let it cool until lukewarm.
  2. Stir the dry yeast into the lukewarm milk and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter (or margarine) and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat the eggs and add them to the butter mixture, mixing well.
  5. Add the yeast mixture and salt to the butter mixture.
  6. Gradually add the flour, alternating with any remaining milk if needed, mixing until a soft, cohesive dough forms.
  7. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, then place in a greased bowl.
  8. Cover and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1.5 to 2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  9. Punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle.
  10. Spread your chosen filling (walnut or poppy seed) evenly over the dough, leaving a small border.
  11. Carefully roll up the dough from the long side into a tight log.
  12. Slice the log into individual rolls and place them on a baking sheet.
  13. Let the shaped rolls rise for 30 minutes until puffy.
  14. Bake in a preheated 350&# 194;°F (175ðC) oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
