Description

These homemade snickerdoodles are the perfect blend of soft, chewy centers and crispy, sweet edges. The signature cream of tartar gives them that distinct tangy flavor and pillowy texture that sets them apart from standard sugar cookies. Coated generously in a warm cinnamon-sugar mixture, these cookies offer a comforting aroma and taste that pairs beautifully with coffee or tea. Ideal for holiday gatherings, bake sales, or simply satisfying a sweet craving on a rainy afternoon, this recipe yields a generous batch of classic treats. Simple ingredients come together to create a nostalgic dessert that appeals to all ages.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375&# 194;°F (190ðC). Line cookie sheets with parchment paper or grease lightly.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat margarine for 30 seconds until smooth. Add the 2 cups of sugar and beat on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add eggs, milk, and vanilla extract to the margarine mixture. Beat well until fully combined and smooth.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, beating on low speed just until the flour is incorporated and dough forms. Do not overmix.
  6. In a small shallow dish, mix together the 3 tablespoons of sugar and the ground cinnamon.
  7. Scoop dough and roll into 1-inch balls. Roll each ball in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until fully coated.
  8. Place balls 2 inches apart on prepared cookie sheets. Gently press down on each ball with the bottom of a glass or your hand to flatten slightly.
  9. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the cookies are set and lightly golden around the edges but still soft in the center.
  10. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Note

Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. For longer storage, freeze cooled cookies for up to 3 months.

If you don't have cream of tartar, you can substitute with 1/4 teaspoon of lemon juice or white vinegar per 1/2 teaspoon of cream of tartar, though the flavor profile may vary slightly. Butter can be used instead of margarine for a richer flavor.

For extra chewy cookies, do not overbake them. They will continue to cook slightly on the hot pan after removal from the oven. Ensure the cinnamon-sugar coating is applied before baking for the best crust.
