Sourdough Biscuits – Country Living

Description

This Southern bread features Unsifted all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon Sugar, Baking powder 3/4 c Sourdough starter (see Note, Salt 1/2 c Vegetable oil. It delivers sweet, indulgent flavor. Wonderful fresh from the oven, pairs well with any meal. Simple to make with ingredients you likely already have on hand, this is a recipe you will come back to again and again.

  1. Heat oven to 375'F.
  2. Grease small baking sheet.
  3. In medium-size bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  4. Stir in starter and oil to form a soft dough.
  5. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead 2 to 3 times.
  6. Divide dough into 4 pieces.
  7. Pat each piece out on greased baking sheet to a 4-inch round.
  8. If desired, cut biscuits with a 4 inch-round cutter to produce straight edges.
  9. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. If you have starter that is thicker, thin some of it with water until it is pourable.
  11. make sourdough starter from commercial yeast: In a pitcher or bowl,
  12. combine 2 C unsifted all-purpose flour, 3 T sugar, 1 package active dry yeast, and 1/2 t salt.
  13. Add 2 C warm water and beat with a wooden spoon until fairly smooth.
  14. Cover loosely with waxed paper; set in warm place for 24 hours.
  15. Stir mixture twice during this fermentation stage.
  16. Store starter, loosely covered, in refrig- erator.
  17. To use, stir and remove starter needed for recipe.
  18. Replenish by stirring in equal amounts of water and flour;
  19. let stand at room temperature several hours, then
  20. stir and return to refrigerator.
