Description

These Spicy Cheese Twists are a delightful savory snack that combines the comfort of soft, yeasted bread with the zesty kick of cheddar cheese and warm spices. The dough is enriched with eggs and milk, creating a tender crumb that holds up beautifully to the savory filling. With just a touch of curry powder, paprika, and cayenne, these twists offer a subtle heat that complements the rich cheese flavor without overpowering it. Perfect for game day gatherings, holiday parties, or as a unique side dish for dinner, they are sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

Directions

  1. Sprinkle yeast into 1/2 cup warm water and let stand for 5 minutes to soften.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine curry powder, paprika, cayenne, margarine, sugar, salt, and scalded milk (cooled to lukewarm).
  3. Add egg yolks and the yeast mixture to the bowl and stir well.
  4. Gradually add flour, beating well after each addition, until a stiff dough forms. You may not need all the flour.
  5. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place until light and doubled in size, about 45 minutes.
  6. In a separate small bowl, beat egg whites with cornstarch until stiff, then fold in 1 cup of shredded cheese. Set aside.
  7. Stir the remaining 1 cup of cheese into the risen dough.
  8. Divide the dough into 2 parts and roll each out on a floured surface to about 1/8-inch thickness.
  9. Cut the dough using a 3-1/2 inch round cutter dipped in flour.
  10. Pinch each circle together across the middle, then gently twist the middle two times while keeping the sides round and flat.
  11. Place twists 1 inch apart on greased cookie sheets.
  12. Top each side of the twists with 1 level teaspoon of the egg white and cheese mixture.
  13. Let the twists rise in a warm place for about 40 minutes or until light.
  14. Bake in a preheated 375-degree oven for 10-12 minutes until golden brown.
