These Sugar Twists are a delightful European-inspired treat, featuring a rich, buttery dough that is laminated to create delicate, flaky layers. The dough is rolled out, folded multiple times with vanilla sugar, and cut into strips that are twisted into elegant spirals. Baked until lightly golden, they offer a perfect balance of crisp texture and sweet flavor. The key is using full-fat sour cream and chilling the dough properly to ensure the layers remain distinct and the pastry holds its shape during baking.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, soften the yeast in the warm water and let sit until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour and salt.
  3. Cut the butter and Crisco into the flour mixture until the pieces are the size of small peas.
  4. In a separate bowl, blend the beaten eggs, sour cream, vanilla, and the yeast mixture.
  5. Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and mix gently, keeping the butter chunks intact.
  6. Wrap the dough tightly in plastic wrap and chill for at least 2 hours, or up to 4 days.
  7. Mix the vanilla extract with the sugar to create the vanilla sugar coating.
  8. Divide the chilled dough into two equal balls.
  9. On a surface dusted with vanilla sugar, roll one ball into a 6 x 12 inch rectangle.
  10. Sprinkle with vanilla sugar, fold the dough into thirds like a letter, and turn 90 degrees.
  11. Repeat the rolling, sugaring, and folding process three or four times to create layers.
  12. Roll out the dough one final time into a rectangle and cut into twelve 1 x 6 inch strips.
  13. Twist each strip lightly, roll in the remaining vanilla sugar, and place on a baking sheet.
  14. Bake at 375F (191C) for 15 to 20 minutes, or until lightly browned.
  15. Repeat with the second dough ball or save for another day.
