Description

This Upside Down Apple Pie flips tradition on its head by placing the sweet, caramelized topping on the bottom before baking. The result is a stunning dessert where apples and nuts are glazed in rich brown sugar, sitting atop a tender, flaky crust. The combination of crisp-tender apples, crunchy pecans or walnuts, and warm cinnamon creates a comforting, nostalgic flavor profile. Its the perfect way to end a hearty meal or serve to guests at a potluck. Easy to assemble with pantry staples, this pie offers a beautiful presentation and delicious taste that family and friends will love.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F (175C).
  2. Line a 9-inch pie plate with a wide circle of aluminum foil, extending the edges up the sides and leaving about 4 inches of foil hanging over the rim to create a handle for inversion.
  3. Grease the foil-lined pie plate heavily with cooking spray or butter.
  4. Arrange pecan or walnut halves round-side down on the bottom of the prepared pie plate.
  5. Sprinkle the packed brown sugar evenly over the nuts.
  6. In a large bowl, combine granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, salt, and lemon juice. Stir until well blended.
  7. Add the sliced apples to the sugar mixture and toss until evenly coated.
  8. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the nuts and brown sugar in the pie plate.
  9. Roll out pie pastry and place it over the top of the apples.
  10. Fold the pastry edges under against the rim of the pie plate and flute to create a sealed border.
  11. Fold the overhanging foil up against the sides of the pie plate to help contain any bubbling juices.
  12. Cut several slits in the top pastry to allow steam to escape.
  13. Bake in the preheated oven for 55 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown.
  14. Remove from oven and let cool slightly for 5 minutes.
  15. Place a large serving plate upside down over the pie.
  16. Carefully invert the pie onto the plate so the caramelized topping is now on top.
  17. Gently peel away the aluminum foil from the bottom (now top) of the pie.
  18. Serve warm.
