Description

This American bread features Warm water (105' to 115'F) -kernels (or wheat flakes, Active dry yeast 1 1/2 teaspoon Salt, Sugar 2 tablespoon Vegetable oil, Unsifted bread flour 1 Large egg, C whole-wheat flour 1 tablespoon Water. It delivers sweet, indulgent flavor. Wonderful fresh from the oven, pairs well with any meal. Simple to make with ingredients you likely already have on hand, this is a recipe you will come back to again and again.

Directions

  1. In small bowl, combine 1/4 C water, the yeast, and 1 t of the sugar; stir to dissolve yeast.
  2. Let stand until foamy- about 5 minutes.
  3. In large bowl, preferably of heavy-duty electric mixer,
  4. combine bread flour, 1 C whole-wheat flour, 1 C rolled wheat, the salt, and remaining sugar.
  5. Add remaining 1 1/4 C water, the oil, and yeast mixture.
  6. With spoon or dough hook of mixer, stir until a soft dough forms.
  7. Turn dough out onto floured surface.
  8. Knead dough, adding as much of remaining whole-wheat flour as necessary to prevent stickiness, until smooth and elastic-about 5 minutes.
  9. Wash, dry, and oil mixing bowl.
  10. Place dough in oiled bowl, turning to bring oiled side up.
  11. Cover with clean cloth;
  12. let dough rise in warm
  13. place , away from drafts, until double in size-about 1 hour.
  14. Generously grease 8 1/2- by 4 1/2-inch loaf pan.
  15. On floured surface, pat dough into an 9-inch loaf and fit into greased loaf pan.
  16. Cover with clean cloth and let rise 45 minutes.
  17. Heat oven to 350'F.
  18. In small bowl, beat together egg and 1 T water.
  19. Brush top of bread with egg mixture and sprinkle with remaining 2 t rolled wheat.
  20. Bake 55 to 60 minutes or until bread is well browned and sounds hollow when tapped on top.
  21. Remove bread from pan; cool on wire rack at least 20 minutes before serving.
