Description

This classic rice dish delivers perfectly fluffy, separate grains with a neutral flavor that absorbs sauces beautifully. Made with just rice, water, and a pinch of salt, it is the ultimate comfort food staple. The texture is light and airy, providing a soothing contrast to spicy or rich main courses. Ideal for weeknight dinners, family gatherings, or as a healthy base for grain bowls. Simple to prepare with pantry staples, this essential recipe ensures success every time without any fuss.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Rinse 1 cup of rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.
  2. Place the rinsed rice in a medium saucepan and add 2 cups of water and a pinch of salt.
  3. Bring the water to a rolling boil over high heat.
  4. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid, and simmer for 15-18 minutes.
  5. Remove the pot from heat and let it stand, covered, for 5 minutes to allow the rice to steam fully.
  6. Fluff the rice gently with a fork before serving.

Note

For best results, use long-grain white rice such as basmati or jasmine. Short-grain rice will require less water and will be stickier.

If the rice is still hard after cooking, add a tablespoon of water and continue cooking on low heat for another 2-3 minutes.

Leftover rice can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat with a splash of water to restore moisture.

For added flavor, substitute water with vegetable or chicken broth, or add a bay leaf or a sprig of fresh herbs while cooking.
